Sarah Starzynski is one of the novel's two protagonists. She is a ten-year-old girl who was arrested along with her family in the Vel' d' Hiv' roundup on Paris, 1942. Throughout the novel, we follow Sarah through her journey of life where she manages to escape from an internment camp and return to Paris in search of her brother who she locked in a cupboard while they were getting arrested.
Julia Jarmond is the novel's other protagonist. She is a forty-five year old American woman living in Paris, 2002. She is a journalist who is writing an article on the Vel' d' Hiv' roundup in 1942. As she researches into the roundup and that time period, she discovers many details of Sarah's life, connecting their two lives together.
